CPHS Basketball Preview: Sandites host Regional Tournament Thursday through Saturday

Charles Page High School’s Ed Dubie Field House will host both boys’ and girls’ Regional Basketball tournaments this year after both Sand Springs teams finished the regular season ranked in the top six in Class 6A.

The Regional Champions and Runners-Up will both advance to the Area Playoffs. The Regional Champions will then only have to win one more game to advance to State, and can afford to lose a game. The Runners-Up will have to win two more to advance to State, and will end their season with a loss.

Girls

No. 16 Ponca City (15-6) will take on No. 20 Jenks (11-11) in the first game Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The two teams last met in the first round of the Jenks/Union Tournament in January. Ponca won that meeting 62-42. Ponca is on a six game winning streak while Jenks is coming off an upset loss.

The Trojans have the No. 3 offense and No. 28 defense in Class 6A, winning by an average score of 62-57. Ponca is ninth offensively and No. 23 defensively with an average score of 60-50.

No. 6 Sand Springs (18-4) will play unranked Owasso (7-16) Thursday at 8:00 p.m. The Sandites beat Owasso 46-30 last month. Sand Springs is riding a five game win streak, but Owasso is trending upward, notching upsets in two of their last three games.

Sand Springs is tenth offensively and fifteenth defensively, winning by an average score of 59-48. Owasso is 28th on offense and nineteenth on defense, losing their games by an average score of 50-41.

Ponca upset Sand Springs 74-62 in the first game of the season, but the Sandites got payback in January, 65-48. Jenks and Owasso also split games this season. The Trojans won the first meeting 54-41 in December, but Owasso won 72-63 two weeks ago.

The finals game will be played Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Boys

No. 11 Southmoore (16-7) will play unranked Broken Arrow (7-15) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The Sabercats rolled the Tigers 78-61 last month in the John Nobles Tournament semifinals. Southmoore is coming off a win, while Broken Arrow is riding a five-game losing streak.

Southmoore holds the No. 12 offense and No. 10 defense, winning by an average score of 63-54. Broken Arrow is nineteenth offensively and 24th defensively, losing by an average score of 62-58.

No. 5 Sand Springs (15-7) will take on unranked Enid (6-15) at 8:00 p.m. The two teams have not yet met this season. The Plainsmen are on a seven game losing streak, while Sand Springs has lost three of their last four games, two of which were against top-four teams.

The Sandites are ninth offensively and twelfth on defense, winning by an average score of 64-55. Enid holds the No. 14 offense and No. 32 defense, losing by an average score of 71-61.
