CPHS Basketball: Sandites head to Bartlesville Tuesday, girls can clinch FVC with win

The Charles Page High School basketball teams are in the home stretch of the regular season with only three games left before the Regional Playoffs begin. Both teams are still in contention for a Frontier Valley Conference title, though only the girls control their destiny.

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Lady Sandites are undefeated in conference play at 11-0 and can clinch the title with a win at No. 8 Bartlesville, even if they lose their final two games.

The No. 5 ranked boys have a much tougher path to the FVC title. No. 2 Booker T. Washington and No. 9 Union both have head-to-head tie breaker wins against Sand Springs, so criteria is out of the question for the Sandites. They need those two teams to finish with ten wins or less. They can’t make Washington or Union lose, but they can do their part by winning out against three teams they have already beaten once this season.

The Lady Sandites will tip off at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bruin Field House. Bartlesville (15-3, 7-2) is third in conference standings and the defending FVC Champions. The two teams have been the most consistent contenders for the FVC title in recent years and have gotten in each other’s way more than once.

Sand Springs won their last conference title in 2017. Last season Bartlesville went undefeated for the title but Sand Springs snapped their 25-game winning streak in the Area playoffs. In December the Sandites snapped Bartlesville’s seventeen-game conference win streak. If the Bruins can knock off Sand Springs they can attempt to claw their way back into the conversation for another title.

Both teams have won their past two games. Sand Springs topped Broken Arrow 69-55 on Friday while Bartlesville edged out No. 17 Booker T. Washington 55-54 on Saturday. Sand Springs holds the No. 3 offense and No. 19 defense in Class 6A, winning by an average score of 62-48. Bartlesville is thirteenth offensively and fifth on defense, winning by an average score of 56-41. Sand Springs won their first meeting 66-48 in December.

The Bartlesville Boys (8-10, 2-7) are on a three-game losing streak and dropped out of the rankings following a 60-48 loss to No. 16 Owasso on Saturday. Sand Springs has yet to beat Bartlesville twice in a season and they are 5-4 in the Eric Savage era.

Sand Springs boasts the No. 9 offense and No. 8 defense in Class 6A, winning by an average score of 64-53. Bartlesville has the third-best defense, but is 28th offensively, losing by an average score of 51-50. The Sandites won their first meeting 64-42 in December. The Bruins are currently eighth in conference standings and have been eliminated from contention for the title.

Bruin Field House is on the campus of Bartlesville High School at 1700 Hillcrest Drive, Bartlesville, OK 74003.
