The Charles Page High School Girls' Soccer team (1-4) suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of undefeated Coweta (4-0) in the Stillwater Cup semifinals, with the lone Sandite goal coming from senior forward Megan Deshazo.
The teams were fairly evenly matched through the first half. Coweta brought a heavy offense with nine shots to the Sandites' four, but keeper Abigail Banks was a solid oak, hauling in five saves. She gave up one goal in the 26th minute to sophomore forward Maranda Ritter, but Deshazo tied it up with two minutes left to enter the half tied 1-1.
The second half was an entirely different picture, however, as the Lady Tigers took a quick lead with a goal in the 48th minute from Breanna Sweetin, assisted by Callie Rucker. Just two minutes later Kenzie Applegate scored on an assist by Ritter. Applegate made it a brace in the 57th minute, then Sweetin earned her brace in the 73rd.
Banks pulled in a pair of saves before the Sandites were finally able to get downfield. Sand Springs got off a few shots on free kicks, but keeper Haley Bandy pulled in her second and third saves of the evening. Madison Metcalfe took the final shot of the evening with five minutes left, but once again Bandy was impenetrable.
The Tigers, who have won their four games this season by an average score of 5-1, will play in the Championship round against Verdigris (4-1) who defeated Stillwater (2-4) 3-2 in overtime penalty kicks. That game will be played at 7:00 p.m. in Pioneer Stadium.
Sand Springs will play for third place against Stillwater at 7:00 p.m. on Colvin Recreational Field at Oklahoma State University. Before losing to Verdigris, Stillwater defeated Will Rogers High School (2-3) 10-0 in the quarterfinals.
The Sand Springs Boys will are also playing in the tournament and will compete for fifth place at 5:20 p.m. in Pioneer Stadium.
