City of Sand Springs unveils new all-terrain "Trash Bandit"

The City of Sand Springs unveiled the newest addition to its fleet Thursday afternoon. The Trash Bandit all-terrain litter vacuum machine allows City workers to collect debris off-road without the physical toll and time limitations of picking it up on foot.

“Cities everywhere struggle daily to keep up with the litter and trash produced by the public, said Community Development Director Grant Gerondale. “With staffing resources stretched to the limit in most municipalities, Sand Springs has chosen to put our machine into service as we improve our efficiency and expand our reach on trash. The Trash Bandit will be a fun way to get the attention of youth with fun graphics and educational messages to help our community by choosing to not litter.”

According to Parks Director Jeff Edwards, the Trash Bandit is capable of cleaning up the entire Highway 412 right-of-way from Case Community Center to QuikTrip in only 45 minutes.

Clyde Boyd Middle School bans cell phones to increase student engagement

The Sand Springs Public School district approved a new policy this summer, banning the use of cellular phones and other electronic devices at Clyde Boyd Middle School and the Sixth Grade Center during school hours.

“In an effort to increase student engagement, enhance student learning, and decrease cyberbullying; CBMS/SGC is implementing a new SSPS Board of Education approved Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy this year,” reads an announcement put forth by the district.

“Students are not allowed to possess cellular phones or electronic devices during school hours. Cellular phones and electronic devices are to be kept in the student’s locked locker between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Students may check text messages between passing periods, but phone calls, videoing, taking pictures and listening to music will not be permitted. The school is not responsible for theft or damage of any of these items brought to school or activities.

“This policy will be enforced starting the first day of school, Tuesday, August 20. With this in mind, we are implementing the following procedure:

  • Every student will have an assigned locker. Students are responsible for bringing their own combination lock.

  • Students will get their assigned locker numbers during schedule pick up. Their locker number will be listed on their schedule.

  • Please bring combination locks during schedule pick up August 13: 9-11 AM; 1-3 PM; or 4-6 PM. You may put your lock on your locker at this time. Students will be required to provide their combination to their 5th hour teacher on the first day of school. The 5th hour teachers will review the new policy and procedures with the students at this time.

  • If your child does not have a lock on their locker and they bring their phone or electronic device to school, they will be required to leave it in the office during the school day.

  • The consequences for not following this policy are detailed in the CBMS/SGC Student Handbook Addendum which can be found on the school website under Parent/Student Documents. Consequences will be implemented starting Monday, August 26, 2019.

“Thank you for your support in our efforts to improve your child’s educational experience.

Sincerely,
CBMS/SGC Administration”

The Sand Springs Local Church Network hosted its annual Back 2 School Bash Sunday afternoon at the Tulsa Tech Sand Springs campus. The free event is open to the public and offers all kinds of back-to-school items and services.

The Tulsa Lions Club provided cholesterol screenings, BMI checks, blood pressure checks, and vision testing. Children were checked for lice and given free haircuts by licensed professionals. A Better Smile provided free dental screenings. Volunteers from numerous local churches helped to distribute free backpacks and school supplies

In addition to the necessities, fun was also on the menu. Sandlot Sno-Balls, popcorn, balloon animals, and the Tulsa County Reading Roadshow were on hand, as were an ambulance and three classic police cars for the children to explore.

Church That Matters holds community service day, donates children's bicycles to flood victims

Members of Church That Matters held their annual “Don’t Go to Church Sunday” this weekend and spent the day in service to the community.

Volunteers worked at the Local Church Network’s Back to School Bash, organizing, setting up, operating, and tearing down the event at the Tulsa Technology Center Sand Springs campus. The event provided free backpacks and school supplies, haircuts, dental checks, physicals, eye exams, food, and inflatables.

Church members performed landscaping and weedeating for the Sand Springs Parks Department, Clyde Boyd Middle School, and an elderly couple in Shannon Valley mobile home park. They also constructed a wooden deck for a home in Shannon Valley.

Workers cleaned, painted, and sorted clothing at DaySpring Villa, a shelter for victim of domestic violence and sex trafficking. They also held worship encounters for both the adults and the kids at the shelter, and played games with the children.

Representatives were stationed at Prattville Laundry to provide free quarters and laundry detergent to the laundromat’s patrons. They also offered free quarters at Bubble Town Car Wash.

The church purchased and assembled 150 children’s bicycles for victims of the historic May flooding, which they gave away during a special service held specifically for flood-affected families. They also organized a community swap meet Saturday, accepting and organizing hundreds of furniture and appliance donations for flooded families.

Church That Matters meets Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at 3 West 41st Street in Sand Springs. They are pastored by Rusty Gunn.

Morrow-Gill Business Park opens in Sand Springs, looking for new tenants

Morrow Gill Lumber Co. was a beacon of small business for six decades in Sand Springs before it closed in 2015. Though the iconic lumber yard is no more, it lives on in the form of a new business park that aims to be a stepping stone for other small local businesses.

When partners Jeff Hilst and Dustin and Dorinda Hansen purchased the five-acre property in 2016 they were unable to recruit a new lumber or hardware store, but that didn’t stop them from developing the property. Not only have they found a tenant for the original facilities, they have also built two additional buildings to help encourage growth in the budding community.

The new Morrow-Gill Business Park features two single-story buildings totaling nearly 50,000 square feet of mixed industrial and office space. Nine of the 25 spaces have already been leased, but there’s still plenty more available for new or growing businesses in the Sand Springs or West Tulsa areas.

The warehouses feature 14’ by 14’ drive-in doors with electric openers, 16’ clear height, LED lighting, radiant heat and HVAC, and ADA-compliant restrooms. Tenants have the choice between 1,250, 1,625, 2,000, or 3,000 sq. ft. with approximately 225 sq. ft. of office space per unit.

The 1,625 sq. ft. units are 25’ by 65’ with entry doors on both ends. The 2,000 sq. ft. units are 40x50, the 1,250 sq. ft. units are 25x50, and the 3,000 sq. ft. units are 30x100 with garage doors on both ends of the warehouse, allowing drive-through convenience.

“Our biggest thing is to help people get out of their garages and find a nice place to work and grow their business,” says Dustin Hansen. The couple envisions the property as perfect for plumbers, electricians, HVAC companies, and other tradesman type businesses. “I like being able to move someone in, and a year later they’re ready to move into a bigger space.

Jeff Hilst has always lived in Tulsa and has been a real estate investor since he was 15 years old. Dustin and Dorinda aren’t originally from Oklahoma, but they’ve lived in the Tulsa area for twenty years and have extensive experience in developing Sand Springs. One of Dorinda’s first jobs in property management was the lease renewal deal that kept the Sand Springs Post Office in its current location, almost fifteen years ago. The partners also own several rent houses in the Sand Springs and Prattville areas.

Although they often deal in big ticket properties, they’re very much a small family operation. The Hansen’s two young daughters can be found helping with chores around the properties, helping envision future construction on undeveloped land, and even riding scooters in the vacant warehouses. “We’re a small business trying to help small businesses,” says Dorinda.

“We’re fully invested in doing what we can to help grow (Sand Springs) and continue developing,” adds Dustin. “We really like the area.” The partners plan to hold an open house in the near future with tours of the available units, and they are already looking for their next big Sand Springs development project.

Sand Springs Fire Department rescues stranded boat with elderly pilot

The Sand Springs Fire Department performed a successful water rescue late Sunday night, retrieving a stranded boat with a single passenger.

The boat’s pilot claims to have put into the Arkansas River before daylight Sunday morning and was stranded for most of the day. The 74-year-old man was without a cellular phone and his plight was reported by a third party who spotted him on the water.

The pilot says he recently purchased the boat and it was his first time putting it in the water. The vehicle began having motor problems early on and ultimately stalled out and partially flooded.

According to Captain Shelby Baughn, the Tulsa Police Department helicopter was unavailable to provide assistance, and the Tulsa Fire Department was called in to help. However, the Sand Springs rescue boat located the stranded vessel shortly before TFD arrived and the flooded boat was hauled out of the water just before midnight.

Organization looking for local families to host foreign exchange students

The Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) is looking to place several international students in the Sand Springs area for the coming school year, and is currently in search of host families.

All exchange students are between the ages of 15-18 and have appropriate visas, medical insurance, and their own spending money. Host parents are responsible for providing meals and transportation, a bedroom and a bed, and an appropriate place to study. Exchange students are allowed to share rooms with children of the same gender, within four years of age. Host parents must be at least 25 years old.

How long you host your student is up to you. Programs include two weeks, one semester, or one academic year. Local Coordinators are available to answer questions, help match students to the perfect home, and advise you throughout the process.

While students are in America they will work on community service projects. Depending on the length of their stay they will also either attend your local high school, or work in an internship program. Hosting an exchange student is an exciting opportunity to share your lifestyle with someone from across the globe, and to expose your family to another country’s culture.

Some of the students currently looking for placement include:

  • Lorenzo, a 16-year-old German boy who is a big fan of American Football and enjoys hiking, politics, history, English, and geography.

  • Erdemkhishig, a 16-year-old Mongolian girl who is interested in exploring new cuisines and enjoys exercise, movies, photography, and vlogging. She wants to be placed in a home where she can attend weekly Christian church services.

  • Jakub, a 17-year-old Polish boy who likes soccer and basketball, enjoys watching movies, plays piano, is interested in economics, music, and fashion.

The Portland-based international nonprofit has been placing exchange students across the globe for more than seventy years. Go to www.ciee.org/hostapply to fill out your application today.

Plans scrapped for controversial Dollar General store in Sand Springs

Plans for a controversial Dollar General store location have been scrapped following significant public outcry.

A one-acre vacant lot at 2702 North State Highway 97 was the intended construction site, but after more than 200 Osage County citizens submitted a petition in opposition, the business has shelved its plans.

The property is currently zoned residential and sits at the entrance to a residential neighborhood. However, it is also within close proximity to a gas station, water tower, mini-storage facility, church, and radio station. In the 1981 neighborhood plat, it was indicated that the lot would be allowed be either residential or commercial.

The Sand Springs Planning Commission failed to pass a recommendation either in favor of or against the rezoning, and the item was advanced to the City Council’s June 17th agenda. A continuance was then issued till the July meeting due to Dollar General’s inability to get a representative to the meeting.

Approximately 240 local residents signed a petition opposing the business, feeling that it was inappropriately encroaching on a residential neighborhood. Approximately 18 individuals submitted letters of support for the construction.

Last week a representative from Rupe Helmer Group, the property management organization representing Dollar General, requested that their application be withdrawn.

“After much discussion and consideration, Rupe Helmer Group will not pursue construction of the Dollar General at the proposed location on HWY 97 in Sand Springs,” reads an email from Executive Vice President Mike Mantle. “Given the local opposition and vitriol, we feel this is the best direction.”

Christine Hamner resigns City Council seat, City accepting applications for replacement

Center: Former City Councilwoman Christine Hamner.

Sand Springs City Councilwoman Christine Hamner has resigned her seat as of July 5th, having moved outside of her ward. The City is currently taking applications for a new Councilor, and will make a decision at their August 26th meeting.

Hamner was sworn in for a three-year term in May of 2017. She recently helped open a Landmark Recovery substance abuse treatment facility in Tulsa, where she is director of outpatient services.

Because there is less than a year remaining in the term, City Council has decided to appoint a replacement rather than spend the time and money on a special election. The regular election for the seat will be held in February.

Applicants for the vacant seat must be a resident of the ward and must be at least 25 years of age. Anyone who would like to be considered for the position should visit the City Municipal Building and request a Board Appointment Form from the City Clerk.

In the event that Council is unable to decide upon a replacement by September 3rd, a special election will be held.
