CPHS Track: Cheyenne Walden wins ninth State Championship, breaks State Record

Charles Page High School senior Cheyenne Walden won her ninth State title Saturday afternoon in Yukon. In the 1600 meter run she finished with a State-record performance of 4:57.07, knocking more than three seconds off the former State record of 5:00.75 set in 2003. She was eight seconds ahead of the Runner-Up, and five seconds ahead of her previous personal-best. This was her eleventh first-place medal in a 1600 run, for which she also won State last year.

On Friday she won the 3200 meter run, defeating the Runner-Up by more than twenty-two seconds for her 24th-straight first-place finish and 28th win overall. She hasn't lost in that event since placing third at State during her freshman year.

The Oklahoma State University-commit already held seven State titles coming into this weekend's OSSAA 6A State Championship. When looking only at official OSSAA sanctioned events, Walden is the most decorated athlete in Sand Springs history.

Sophomore Aden Baughman has been utterly unstoppable in the 800 meter run this season. He has won six out of seven track meets, capping the year with his first 6A State Championship.

Not only did he win the State Championship with the fastest performance of his career, but he won with a three-second margin of victory over the runner-up. The 1:53.16 run was a remarkable improvement over his Regional run of 1:55.42, which was already the fastest time of the season for any high school athlete at any meet in Oklahoma, at any classification. His new time was only 1.46 seconds behind the all-time State Tournament record set in 2007.

The next four runners after Baughman were all seniors, leaving him with a 4.35 margin of victory over any runner he'll compete against next year. He also competed in the 1600 run and took tenth place in 4:33.12. He was only 2.7 seconds behind his personal-best and 13.81 seconds behind the champion.

Colton Washington took seventh place in the long jump, leaping 21'11.25".

Kris Edwards took tenth place in shot put with throws of 44'01.50", 45'01.50", and 47'01.50".

The Lady Sandite 3200 relay team, comprised of Walden, Alexis Davis, Elizabeth Watts, and Tiqvah Soap, took eleventh place with a time of 10:29.79.

The boys' 3200 relay team, comprised of Jaelyn Jackson, Ian Baustert, Jacob Garbey, and Baughman, took twelfth place with a time of 8:20.89, beating their season-best by nearly two seconds. It was the best Sandite performance since the 2013 team ran a pair of 8:17's to win the Skiatook meet and Regional meet.

Soap placed sixteenth in the 800 meter run with a career-best performance of 2:30.79.

Charles Page High School sophomore Aden Baughman has been utterly unstoppable in the 800 meter run this season, blowing away competitors left and right everywhere he goes. He has won six out of seven track meets, capping the year with a 6A State Championship win in Yukon.

He came in Runner-Up at the Frontier Valley Conference meet two weeks ago, but knocked more than two seconds off his time at Regionals.

Baughman is also a State contender in the 1600 where he qualified with a runner-up performance and a career-best 4:30.42. He hasn't won the 1600 yet, but he has come in runner-up at three-straight meets, and has improved on his personal record all three times.

Baughman also qualified for State as part of the 3200 relay team alongside Jacob Garbey, Jaelyn Jackson, and Ian Baustert. They took third place in 8:32.64.

Cheyenne Walden wins ninth Frontier Valley Conference Championship

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Oklahoma State University-signed senior Cheyenne Walden earned her ninth Frontier Valley Conference title last week at Union High School. She was the only Sandite to take home a conference title, but Aden Baughman took silver while Kristopher Edwards and the Girls' 3200 relay team earned bronze.

Walden placed second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:10.98, just three seconds behind Bartlesville's Rilee Rigdon. She was the defending champion in both the 1600 and 3200. She retained her title in the 3200 with a time of 10:48.23, her fastest time of the season, less than three seconds behind her career-best. She topped Bartlesville Runner-Up Shay Stayton by 53 seconds.

Walden has won four Conference titles in the 3200, one in the 1600, and four Cross Country titles.

Madelynn Adams tied her personal record in the 200 meter dash, taking thirteenth place in 29.9 seconds. Stephanie Genn set a PR of 1:07.15 for tenth place in the 400. The 1600 relay team finished less than a second behind their season-best with a seventh place finish in 4:38.22. The 3200 relay team took third in 10:36.74.

The Sandite boys saw an end to their run of four-straight track meets with a first-place finisher, but Baughman came close with a second place finish in the 800 meter run. He previously won four-straight, but he still gave the second-best performance of his career and was less than half a second behind his PR and exactly half a second behind Owasso's Carson Ball.

Kyle Keener took eighth in the 110 hurdles with a PR of 17.31. Josh Ivy knocked nearly two seconds off his PR, taking fifteenth in the 300 hurdle in 50.07. Alex Newport PRed in both hurdle events, finishing eleventh in the 110 in 21.34, and sixteenth in the 300 in 51.09. Joel Mackey placed sixth in the 100 in 11.49 and fourth in the 200 in 22.59. Ben Norte PRed for the fourth straight week with a seventeenth place finish in the 200 in 24.06. The Charles Page High School Track and Field teams competed at the Booker T. Washington Hornet Invitational in Tulsa Friday afternoon and both the Boys' and Girls' teams came in fifth place out of twelve teams for their best performance in several seasons.

Oklahoma State University-signed senior Cheyenne Walden won her 21st-straight and 25th gold medal overall in the 3200 run, finishing in 11:15.25, nearly a full minute ahead of the runner-up. Southwestern Oklahoma State University-signed senior Alexis Davis took fourth in the event with a time of 13:15.82.

Sophomore Aden Baughman won his fourth-straight 800 run in 1:58.11, less than a second behind his career-best performance. He also took second in the 1600 for the second week in a row with a personal-record of 4:32.89, just four seconds behind the winner.

Kristopher Edwards won his first gold medal ever with a dominating shot put performance. He was a foot short of his PR, but his 45'11.00" distance was eight inches more than he needed to beat the runner-up.

Tiqvah Soap took second place in the 800 run with a PR of 2:31.25, just eleven seconds behind the champion. Davis took eighth in the event with a PR of 2:49.05.

The boys' 3200 meter relay team continued their outstanding record for the season, taking third place in 8:22.50, just eleven seconds behind the champions from Claremore, for their best finish since the 2013 Regional Championship team. They have improved in every single performance this season and this week's time was one second better than the 2013 Conference Runner-Up team.
