CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites win third-straight Area Championship, presented by Kelly Smith - Farmers Insurance

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (21-4) won their third-straight Area Championship Thursday evening in Jenks, knocking off No. 3 Moore (19-6) with a lopsided fourth-quarter scoring frenzy.

Coverage of the game is sponsored by Kelly Smith Farmers Insurance Agency at 3973 South Highway 97 in Sand Springs. Get the best coverage for your family from a name Sandites trust. For Home, Auto, Life, Business and more, contact 918-245-0100.

Sand Springs handily won the first and fourth quarters, but the Lionesses gave them a run for their money in the middle stretch and didn’t give up the final lead till midway through the fourth. Ultimately the Frontier Valley Champions prevailed 57-43 over the Central Oklahoma team, punching their ticket to the State Tournament for the third straight year.

University of Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson led all scorers, despite not even playing the second quarter, with nineteen points. Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter and junior Madison Burris scored fourteen apiece for Sand Springs. 6’3” sophomore standout Aaliyah Moore was the aptly-named leading scorer for Moore, with a team-best seventeen.

The Lady Sandites jumped out to a 14-7 lead after the first period with seven points from Johnson, four from Kersgeiter, and three from Burris.

Kersgieter pushed the advantage to double digits early in the second period but missed her next four free throw attempts and the Lions began to claw their way back into contention with threes from Kelsi Fitzgerald, Raychael Harjo, and Peyton Andrews. By halftime their deficit had dropped to only 23-22.

Moore took the lead for the Lions with a pair of free throws early in the third. Johnson reclaimed it, Harjo scored two more for the Lions, then Burris tied it at 27-27. The teams traded leads from there but the Sandites got the final say with a pair of free throws from Taber and a last second layup from Johnson.

The teams continued trading the lead to start the fourth, but the Sandites got hot with five points from Burris and four from Johnson before Moore ended the run with a pair of freebies. By that point it was too far gone, and the Sandites continued to rain down fire, ending the game on a six-point streak.

Moore will get one more chance at a State Tournament appearance, when they take on the loser of Shawnee vs. Bartlesville Saturday afternoon in Claremore. The Sandites will return to action in the State Quarterfinals Thursday, March 7th. The site of the game has yet to be determined.

CPHS Basketball Preview presented by Kelly Smith - Farmers Insurance

Last week the Charles Page High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both won their Regional Championships to advance to the Area playoffs in the winners’ bracket.

This weekend they will look to punch their tickets to State. Sandite Pride News will be bringing you full coverage of Thursday and Friday’s games, sponsored by Kelly Smith Farmers Insurance Agency.

Located in the Springs Village shopping center, Kelly Smith Insurance covers home, auto, life, renters, business, and more. Visit them at 3973 South Highway 97 in Sand Springs, or reach out by phone at 918-241-0100.

Both teams only need to win one more game to advance to the State Tournament, and both can afford to lose once without being eliminated from contention.

Both teams made it to State last year. The girls won the Regional and Area Championships, while the boys placed second at Regionals and won the Area Consolation bracket. Both teams lost in the quarterfinals at State.

Girls

The No. 6 ranked Lady Sandites (20-4) will tip off Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Jenks High School against No. 3 Moore (19-5). The loser will take on the winner of Shawnee vs. Bartlesville Saturday in Claremore.

Sand Springs wrapped up the regular season with an undefeated Frontier Valley Conference title and they are riding a seven-game win streak. The Sandites hold the No. 6 offense and No. 14 defense in Class 6A, winning by an average score of 60-48.

Moore went 10-4 for third place in the Central Oklahoma Conference. The Lionesses lost their last two games of the regular season before winning their Regional. They own the No. 9 offense and No. 7 defense, winning by an average score of 60-44.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites win third-straight Regional Championship, Kersgieter scores 25

University of Kansas-committed senior Holly Kersgieter scored 25 points Saturday afternoon at the Ed Dubie Field House, leading the Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (20-4) to their third-straight Regional Championship. The Lady Sandites defeated No. 16 Ponca City 66-47 in a wild come-from-behind affair.

The first period saw six lead changes before the Wildcats went on a nine-point run to double Sand Springs at 15-7. Isabella Regalado broke the streak with a three to end the period, and Kersgieter kicked off the second period with a layup and a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game.

Ponca quickly retaliated with a layup from Ryley Beard. Baylee Fincher hit a free throw and took a steal coast to coast, then Ashlynn Fincher sank a three and Beard made a free throw for their first double-digit lead. Destiny Johnson broke up the run with her first three-pointer of the game. Kersgeiter followed it with a layup and a trio of free throws, and Madison Burris rebounded for two, but Baylee Fincher hit a half court three at the buzzer for a 27-24 halftime advantage.

The Sandites outscored the Wildcats 21-12 in the third period. Burris kicked off a seven point run with a pair of free throws from Johnson and a three from Kersgieter, Ashlynn Fincher scored four to sandwich a three from Johnson, then Regalado hit a pair of free throws and Jacie Taber rebounded for two to end the period 45-39.

Madison Birnbaum made the first basket of the final period, then Kersgieter and Padilla combined for four at the charity stripe followed by a three from Johnson for their first double-digit lead at 52-41. Ashlynn Fincher rattled off a trio of free throws, Padilla hit two in response, then the Sandites took a big loss when Johnson fouled out with 2:56 to play.

Baylee Fincher scored two more from the stripe, then things began to fall apart for the visitors. Kersgeiter scored a pair of free throws, Ashlynn Fincher fouled out, and Ponca Head Coach Jody Fincher received a technical. The Sandites went on a twelve point run with ten free throws and a layup from Regalado for a twenty-point lead before Carlie Badley broke it up with the final basket of the game.

Johnson, a University of Tulsa commit, scored seventeen for Sand Springs, and Ponca also had two in double digits. Ashlynn Fincher led with sixteen and Baylee Fincher had thirteen.

Both Sand Springs and Ponca will advance to the Area playoffs. Sand Springs will only need to win one game in Area to advance to State, and can afford to lose once, while Ponca will need to win twice and will be eliminated with a loss.
